SPIRIT PRISON - "FRAGILE"

Posted by Matthew Windsor on

our homie Spirit Prison just put out his latest track "FRAGILE", produced by Monom, and it's something special. in the past five years i've watched emo rap go from being a groundbreaking new idea, to a parody of itself, and now it seems like it's really coming into it's own. early pioneers like Coldhart, Lil Tracy, Nedarb, Surrender Dorothy etc laid a groundwork that was snatched up and beaten into the ground by kids trying to imitate those artists without adding anything new, and you could be forgiven for dismissing the whole genre if you took a snapshot of it in 2018.

going forward, i'm really excited that there's artists like Spirit Prison continuing to push this genre and make it into their own. check out what our boy had to say about the current state of things here in SLC, some artists you should be listening to, and run up the track below:

first off, how are you handling the quarantine situation? what was your experience w the earthquake like? have you been more or less productive since shit hit the fan?

.

I’m handling it alright I think. My work isn’t closing so I still work 5 days a week. Thankful to have a job but also I’m really not tryna get sick right now.

The earthquake was fucking nuts. I know people from California or anywhere with more seismic activity are gonna be like “damn, what a bitch, we have earthquakes worse than that all the time” but I don’t care lmao. That was mine and my girlfriends first earthquake in our lives so that shit was terrifying. Not a fun way to wake up.

I thought I’d be more productive since I’m only leaving the house to go to work or get groceries, but I honestly have probably been less productive. I’ve been in a bit of a rut creatively until I made this new song. I’ve kinda just been posted up playing video games the whole time with my girlfriend.

tell me about the new song, what made you sit down and write it? what were you listening to when you made it? anything come to mind as an influence?
.
.
Like I said I’ve been in kind of a rut. I keep making loops and getting into making the beat and then giving up on it. Nothing has been hitting how I want it to really. I think it’s just because I released the album and poured out so much into that both lyrically and production wise. I think I’m still bouncing back a bit from that.
I hit up Monom and asked if he had any beats he wasn’t planning on using and he sent me two beats. When I heard the first beat I immediately started writing to it. I just had a little spark of inspiration and was like “fuck, I need to take advantage of this” and I ended writing and recording the hook that night and then finishing it up the next day.
Lately I’ve been listening to a ton of $not, Bladee, and Lil Uzi (EA was well worth the wait). I don’t think any of those artists have anything to do with the song, but who knows.
Influence wise honestly anytime I hear a Monom beat I just pretty much immediately have a melody in mind and can start writing. So I guess it’s mostly influenced by monom, both his lyrics and production.

what’s it like being part of salt lake’s “scene” for lack of a better word? being split between the two, do you feel more supported by kids from the rap scene or kids from the hardcore/emo scene, or is there even a distinction anymore?
 .
.
Being a part of the salt lake scene is amazing. Honestly there really isn’t much of a distinction between any of the different subsets, people within the scene are just really supportive of everyone honestly. We all fuck with each other and stand up for each other. I feel like even if I don’t fuck with someone’s music, but I fuck with them, I want nothing but good for them, ya know? I wanna see everyone up here thrive. So much talent.

.
who are some of your favorite artists out right now, locally or otherwise?
.
.
Locally imma have to say Choice Coin (go peep their ep), Breakfast in Silence (go listen to their new album), Eichlers, cauterizer, stonethrower, Horrible Penny. I’m probably missing a ton tho honestly so much good stuff rn.
As for everywhere else in the world imma say Monom, Saiah, AKA Carpenter, Doves (probably my biggest influence), and a whole bunch more people. I’ve been listening to this record out on Solium Records called Koschei by Vladimir Leanin, that record is super cool. I had the opportunity to do a lil limited run cassette of my album through Solium and found out about that record because they put that out at like the same time.
